Use older inventory first. Mark the delivery date or arrange bags so the earliest shipment remains accessible. Salt can have a long shelf life when kept dry, but rotating stock prevents forgotten bags from sitting through repeated seasons.
Protect Open and Damaged Bags
Once a bag is opened, move the remaining product into a clean moisture resistant container with a secure lid. Label it clearly so nobody mistakes water softener salt for food grade, pool or ice melt products.
Transfer salt from a badly torn bag before it spills or absorbs moisture. Sweep spilled dry salt promptly because it can create a slippery surface and may affect nearby metal or equipment.
Never mix unknown products in one container. Different applications and softener systems may require different salt grades.

Buying more salt than the facility can store properly may create unnecessary handling and damaged inventory. Review average monthly use, peak demand and the time between deliveries.
